Culinary Tips and Tricks

Category: Health & Wellness

Author: Kale Crawford, Culinary Director

As Culinary Director at Mallard Point Senior Living, I have a wealth of experience in creating meals that are not only nutritious but also delicious and satisfying. Over the years, I’ve picked up countless tricks that make cooking easier, more flavorful, and even a little more fun. I want to share my best-kept secrets—unexpected ingredient pairings, must-have pantry staples, underrated kitchen tools, and game-changing techniques that can transform the way you cook. Whether you’re a beginner looking to sharpen your skills or a seasoned cook hoping to elevate your dishes, these expert insights will inspire you to get creative in the kitchen.

Versatile Tools and Flavorful Staples

Every cook should have a $3 tool I call the “grabber flipper thing.” I use it constantly. It’s perfect for flipping Reubens, patty melts, or any thick grilled sandwich with precision.

To create quick, flavorful meals, I stock pantry staples like pasta, chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, toasted sesame oil, hot sauce, mustards, panko, and assorted nuts. These ingredients allow for flexibility and bold flavor in a pinch.

Beginner cooks should start by mastering knife skills, roasting, and boiling. Early in my career, I discovered a fun trick—making plate paint from beets. It’s simple, creative, and adds a colorful finishing touch.

Creative Combos and Pro-Level Technique

For unexpected flavor pairings, I recommend adding tarragon to chicken noodle soup or casseroles. It brings a vibrant, herby note that lifts the dish. Another favorite is using allspice in marinara sauce, which adds a unique depth to a familiar classic.

When grilling steak, I flip it exactly four times to achieve perfect crisscross grill marks. For pasta, I always cook it al dente and taste soup several times throughout the cooking process. This helps adjust the seasoning and ensure the texture is just right.

To elevate home-cooked meals to restaurant quality, use fresh, high-quality ingredients. The difference in taste and texture is noticeable—and absolutely worth it.

Mastering these culinary tips and tricks will elevate your home cooking to restaurant-quality. Simple techniques can transform ordinary dishes into extraordinary meals. By applying the expert strategies I’ve learned throughout my career, you’ll cook with more flavor, confidence, and creativity in every dish.
