Every great meal starts with someone who cares.
Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.
In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.
We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

As Culinary Director at Mallard Point, my love for cooking started early. I began helping my mother cook for family gatherings when I was young. Over time, I became drawn to homestyle cooking.
Senior living is a natural place to share that kind of food. There is no better environment for cooking familiar, comforting meals than a resident’s home. Each day brings the chance to serve food that feels warm, personal, and meaningful.
Residents have also taught me to cherish each day. Through daily conversations, they remind me to value loved ones and not take time for granted. Those lessons stay with me long after the meal is over.
Some of my favorite traditions are brunches and Candlelight Dinners. These events give the culinary team a chance to have fun and be creative. They also allow residents to enjoy meals that feel special, thoughtful, and full of hospitality.
Success in culinary in senior living takes a sense of humor and humility. It also takes the ability to receive feedback well. Residents know what they enjoy, and their opinions can help the team keep improving.
A strong culinary team needs deep cooking knowledge. Just as importantly, they need a willingness to keep learning from residents. Being humble, consistent, honest, and transparent helps build trust with both residents and co-workers.
One moment that showed the impact of this work happened after a resident moved in. A couple of weeks after her move, I asked how things were going. She brought up the charcuterie board I had made for her initial tour.
She also remembered how kindly she had been treated. Then she grabbed my forearm, looked me in the eyes, and said she would never forget it. Her sincerity made the moment unforgettable.
That conversation reminded me that what we do truly matters. A thoughtful welcome, a beautiful meal, and a kind interaction can stay with someone. In senior living culinary, those moments matter every single day.
Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.
Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.
To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.
Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
